How to play

Ballot is a daily guessing game where the crowd sets the answer. There's one question a day, like how many jellybeans are in a jar, or how you'd rate pineapple on pizza. You don't win by being right. You win by being closest to the average of everyone's answers.

  1. Read today's question and pick a whole number in the range shown.
  2. Lock it in. You get one answer per day and it can't be changed, so think about what everyone else will say.
  3. Come back after midnight Eastern time. Yesterday's results show the crowd's average, a chart of every answer, and how close you were.
  4. Land in the top 10% for a blue ribbon, the top 25% for a red one, or the top half for a white one.

The game is a nod to Francis Galton. In 1906 he collected the tickets from an ox-weighing contest at a fair in Plymouth, England, and found that the middle guess of the 787 entries was within 1% of the ox's real weight. Crowds are often wiser together than any one person in them. Ballot asks a slightly different question: can you predict what the crowd will say?
